In the 19th and early 20th century, Britain was a male-dominated society. The ideal place for women was assumed to be at home, cooking and cleaning. Women rarely got professional training for medical jobs, and nursing was seen as an unsuitable profession for women. But many groups of women wanted a bigger role in the world.

In 1853, after the Crimean War had started, Nightingale led a group of women on an expedition to heal soldiers. Though they were not welcome at first, these nurses made several successful expeditions to Crimea, and Florence Nightingale’s legacy of increasing social awareness about nursing paved the way for the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry to be officially involved in war.
